Sterling Publishing, Print Writing Book

I just finished up a Print Writing book project for Sterling Publishing. It is one of my largest projects to date–52 illustrations, (a main and a spot for each letter of the alphabet). It kept me quite busy over the holidays! Here’s a sampling of several of my favorites.

Happy New Year, illobookers!

the unfinished postcard

Here’s a couple characters from a postcard I was working with a buddy of mine. He and I started an illustration collective (well, just he and I here in Charlotte). We were planning on doing a combination of both our work… two characters by me and two by him and we’d both work on the background together.

We both finished our characters, but couldn’t really get them working nicely together. It just felt too disjointed. Anyhoo, while fiddling with it, I got busy and he got a full-time job. I’d love to finish it, but not sure if it will happen. I figured it would be great to share since Halloween is coming up.

4 months?!

My blog has not been updated in 4 months! How sad is that? I’d like to say it’s because I’ve been far too busy. I’ve been somewhat busy… just not ’4-months and no update busy’.

I will try to do better! ILLOBOOK is too dang awesome for me to not keep it active!

Here’s a series of illustrations I did for the dog and cat tag identification startup, WUV. It’s an excellent product. Elegantly designed dog tags that can be personalized with a photo of you and your pet. A big thank-you to April and Wendy for the fun job!

AWR Brochure

Here’s a job I just finished for Adventist World Radio. It’s a brochure of games and stories for children. This is my second one for them and it’s a great gig. Shelley Nolan, the communication director always gives me a lot of creative freedom… hence the smiling foods and radio. I created the puzzles. I’m a puzzle master (not really). If you can figure them out, you must be like a genius or something.

little paintings

Whenever there is a lull in my freelance load, I like to break out my gouache paints and do something non-digital. I just listen to music and paint in my sketchbook. It also helps me to think differently when approaching a real, paying job. It’s a great exercise for me… I thought I’d share a few of my favorites.

Westchester Magazine, Winter Workouts

Here’s a piece I just finished up for Aiko Masazumi at Westchester magazine. The piece was about workouts you can do in winter. Ice skating, cross-country skiing, platform tennis, and curling were listed. I wanted to play off the recent flight cancellations/airport debacle. It was a stretch, but the editor liked it.

The Boston Globe, book review

I had the pleasure of working with Jane Martin at The Boston Globe just before Christmas. This was for the book review of 20 Under 40, Stories From The New Yorker. Jane’s concept was a play on the reviewer’s title- Young Guns. I love doing editorial stuff and I hope to get more assignments like this in 2011.

I think it ran in last Sunday’s paper, but I’m not certain. Here’s a link to the review online.

I hope everyone had a great holiday!

Lunch Money, Original Friend Party- Part 2

I drove down to Columbia, SC for the Original Friend release party this weekend. It was a great turn out and loads of fun. Lunch Money played the CD from start to finish and the kids (and adults) loved it! Afterward, the band and I signed CDs and posters.

The CD will be available for purchase on Lunch Money’s website this Tuesday. iTunes downloads will also be available… but you don’t get the fancy-schmancy packaging.

Here are the remaining CD panels and some of my favorite illustrations from the booklet. Also, a video tour of the CD!

Cover for Lunch Money's 3rd album, Original friend

This Saturday, November 20th, is the release date of Lunch Money‘s 3rd album, Original Friend. This is the second album I’ve illustrated and designed for them. I put a lot of work into it and it was great fun. I’ll reveal the rest of the panels and booklet illustrations after it’s officially out. We want to keep it a surprise.

To celebrate the the album’s release, Lunch Money is performing the new alubum from start to finish at the Children’s Room (Richland County Public Library), November 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Columbia, SC. I created a limited-edition, 2-color silkscreen poster as a free giveaway.  Bring yo kids, bring yo wife, bring yo husbands too… cuz they singin’ for everybody!

First post!

This is my first post on my brand-new blog. Thank-you to my lovely host, Laura Tallardy. I’ll try not to stink up the place!

Here’s a piece I just completed for Stephanie Glaros at The Utne Reader. It was my second time working with her. I hope to make it a habit. The article is basically about how activists are provided with childcare so they aren’t left out of the causes they want to be involved with.
